Foster Parents:

- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must complete an information session virtually or in-person at their local county DFCS office
- Must successfully complete pre-service training and a home evaluation
- Must complete a medical exam
- Must undergo child protective screenings and criminal records checks (Note: Screenings must also occur in the child abuse and neglect registry of additional states if the prospective foster parent or any other adult household member has resided there within the past five years)
- Must provide proof of current residence and financial stability

Each county DFCS office holds in-person and virtual information sessions on a regular basis. After calling 1-877-210-KIDS, prospective foster parents will be invited to a session close to their county of residence.

Information regarding this stage of approval will be provided during the information session in stage two.
Adoptive Parents:

- Must be at least 21 years of age or married and living with his/her spouse
- Must be at least 10 years older than the child, except when the individual is a step-parent or relative of the child
- Must be a resident of Georgia at the time the petition for adoption is filed
- Must be financially, physically, and mentally able to have permanent custody of the child

Georgia currently needs permanent homes for children over the age of 8 and sibling groups.

Wednesday’s Child is Georgia’s partnership with Fox 5 Atlanta and the DHS’ Division of Family & Children Services. An award-winning program with a proven track record of success, it is a national campaign to increase the number of adoptions of children in foster care. The children featured on Wednesday’s Child are those in the most urgent need of a home.
